Celebrating Women's History Month

March 18, 2024

As mothers, we understand the importance of teaching our children about the remarkable achievements and contributions of women throughout history. March is Women's History Month, a time to honor the trailblazers, pioneers, and unsung heroes who have shaped our world. As a fellow mom, I'm excited to share some inspiring ideas for celebrating Women's History Month as a family and empowering our children with the stories of extraordinary women.

  1. Explore Herstory through books: Dive into the rich tapestry of women's history by reading books that highlight the lives and accomplishments of female leaders, activists, scientists, artists, and more. Create a reading list featuring diverse stories and perspectives, from picture books for young children to biographies for older readers. Gather as a family to discuss the inspiring women you discover and the lessons we can learn from their experiences.
  2. Cook and Share Women’s Recipes: Explore recipes from different cultures, especially those passed down by women. Whether it’s baking challah bread or making samosas, involve the kids in the kitchen. Talk about the traditions behind each dish. Organize a potluck with friends and family. Each participant can prepare a dish inspired by a famous woman. Share stories and recipes over a dinner—it’s a delightful way to connect.
  3. Organize a family field trip: Take your family on a field trip to explore local landmarks, museums, or exhibits that celebrate women's history. Whether it's visiting a women's history museum, touring a historic site dedicated to a notable woman, or attending a special event or lecture, immerse yourselves in the stories of women who have made a difference in your community and beyond.
  4. Highlight contemporary trailblazers: While it's important to honor the pioneers of the past, let's also shine a spotlight on the contemporary trailblazers who are shaping the world today. Research and discuss women who are making waves in fields like STEM, business, activism, and the arts. Follow their journeys on social media, attend virtual talks or workshops featuring these changemakers, and encourage your children to dream big and pursue their passions.
  5. Support women-owned businesses: Show your support for women entrepreneurs and small business owners by shopping at women-owned businesses in your community or online. Whether it's purchasing handmade crafts, artisanal goods, or specialty foods, every purchase helps empower women to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams. Encourage your children to be conscious consumers and understand the impact of their spending choices.

Women's History Month is an opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the indelible mark women have left on our world. By exploring herstory, fostering meaningful discussions, and supporting women's achievements, we can empower our children to recognize their own potential and strive for a future where equality and opportunity abound. Let's make this Women's History Month one to remember as we honor the past, celebrate the present, and inspire the future generation of changemakers.
